CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION

Candidates who can apply for access to the Master in Music course:

a) Holders of the degree of “Licenciado em Música” or legal equivalent with 120 ECTS in Vocal or Instrumental specialities, Musical Education, and Musicology, and none with less than 25 ECTS;

b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this process;

c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as satisfying the objectives of the Licenciatura em Música degree by the Scientific Committee of the Master in Music Teaching;

d) Students who complete one of the higher grades referred to in a), b) or c) up to the enrollment act.

e) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting ability to carry out this course of study by the Scientific Committee of the course.

SELECTION AND CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA

1 — Composition

a) The selection of candidates is made through the presentation of a portfolio with works that the candidate considers relevant in his/her own production, integrating, whenever possible, recordings of public executions of the same, a text in Portuguese justifying the works' presentation, an explanatory text in Portuguese stating the motivations and intentions for taking this course, and an interview. 

b) In the portfolio are evaluated: the degree of professionalism of the writing and general finishing of the scores; the number of works, also considering the diversity of genres, the instrumental formations and the media used; the degree of aesthetical and technical reflection present in the musical production; the degree of involvement with the musical community, whenever the recordings referred to in paragraph 1 a) of this article are made available.

c) In the explanatory statement referring the motivations and intentions to attend this Master's degree program, and in the interview referred to in a), the oral and written mastery of the Portuguese Language and essential rules of logical argumentation shall be evaluated (Art. 17th of Decree-Law No. 79 / 2014).

2 - Conducting: Choral and Orchestral

a) The selection of candidates is made through the presentation of a portfolio, a practical test, a text in Portuguese justifying the choice of the performances presented in the portfolio, an explanatory text in Portuguese stating the motivations and intentions for taking this course, and an interview. The portfolio will include the relevant experience in Conducting and a DVD with works conducted by the candidate in at least two different formations - such as Banda / Winds Orchestra, Strings Orchestra / Symphony Orchestra, big "a capella" Choir, Ensemble or Vocal Group "a capella" of smaller dimension, Choir and Orchestra (symphonic, winds or strings), Choir and Instrumental Ensemble, Mixed Instrumental Ensemble;

b) In the portfolio are evaluated: the experience of the candidate as a Conductor; the rigor of execution; the technical mastery, the interpretive and expressive capacities, the degree of gesture / facial communication of the candidate with the formations presented in the DVD.

c) For Masters in Choral Conducting there is a practical exam that will consist of a test of approximately 15 minutes and an auditory test of error detection.

d) For the Masters in Orchestral Conducting the practical exam will consist of a 5 minutes rehearsal, followed by the performance of the mandatory piece.

e) The jury will evaluate the candidate's experience in Conducting/Choral or Orchestral in the following aspects:

- Conducting technique;

- Comunication with the choir or orchestra;

- Listening and reactivity;

- Leadership;

- Knowledge and understanding of the music performed;

- Interpretation.

f) In the explanatory statement referring the motivations and intentions to attend this Master's degree program, and in the interview referred to in a), the oral and written mastery of the Portuguese Language and essential rules of logical argumentation shall be evaluated (Art. 17th of Decree-Law No. 79 / 2014).

3 - Musical Education

a) The selection of the candidates is made through:

- practical tests, whose content or program is disclosed at least 30 days in advance of the date of the test;

- a text in Portuguese that justifies the intention to apply to the Master's degree;

- written test about pedagogy;

- an interview.

b) In the practical tests will be evaluated:

- the rigor of execution;

- the technical mastery;

- interpretive and expressive capacities;

- the degree of investment of the candidate in the preparation of the program.

c) In the written test about pedagogy will be evaluated:

- the capacity for pedagogical and didactic reflection in the field of music teaching;

- musical education specialized literature knowledge;

- knowledge in musical learning process in the scope of specialized Music Education and Music Initiation.

d)  In the explanatory statement referring the motivations and intentions to attend this Master's degree program, and in the interview referred to in a), the oral and written mastery of the Portuguese Language and essential rules of logical argumentation shall be evaluated (Art. 17th of Decree-Law No. 79 / 2014).

4 - Remaining Areas

Candidates shall be selected on the basis of practical exams that include:

- the execution of a program which has been published at least 30 days before the date of the test;

- an explanatory text in Portuguese stating the motivations and intentions for taking this course;

- an interview.

5- Evaluation Criteria

a) In the practical exams are evaluated: the rigor of the execution; the technical mastery; interpretive and expressive capacities; the degree of investment of the candidate in the preparation of the presented program.

b) In the text and interview referred to in 3, the oral and written mastery of the Portuguese Language and essential rules of logical argumentation shall be evaluated (Art. 17th of Decree-Law No. 79 / 2014). The evaluation of the oral and written mastery of the Portuguese language and the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation is based on the explanatory statement referring the motivations and intentions to attend this Master's degree program, and the interview. This is an eliminatory evaluation and it includes the following components:

a) The presentation of a written text that includes the main lines of motivation and intentions for attending this Master's in Music Teaching program;
b) An oral interview lasting approximately fifteen minutes;

The written test is designed to assess the written mastery of the Portuguese language and the skills of critical analysis, by performing tasks such as presenting ideas and contextualizing them through the text by the candidate.
The interview is intended to assess the oral mastery of the Portuguese language and the candidate's capacity for argument.
The interview is conducted by three members of the respective jury.
In each of the components, the candidates must obtain a result that satisfies the mastery condition in the above mentioned strands.
The evaluation of the two components is expressed by the terms Approved or Not Approved and results from the application of the following general criteria:

- Contents

- Lexicon and vocabulary used;

- Adequacy of discourse;

 - Linguistic correction (syntax and morphology, punctuation and spelling);

 - Structuring of speech;

- Clarity and articulation of ideas;

- Contextualization and foundation of concepts and ideas;

- Ability to argue;

a) In each Area of ​​Specialization, the evaluation of portfolios and practical exams is carried out by a jury appointed by the Scientific Committee of the Master in Music Teaching and composed of three professors, of which at least one belongs to the respective area of ​​specialization / instrument

b) Portfolio evaluation and practical exams classifications are translated into the numerical scale from 0 to 20.

c) The results of the admission exams are presented as follows:

- Single list, in alphabetical order, of the approved candidates;

- Serial lists of candidates, by area / instruments;

- Single list, in alphabetical order, of the candidates admitted.

d) In addition to the classifications obtained in the admission exams, the final list of admitted candidates shall take into account the need to ensure a balanced functioning of the different areas of specialization / instruments.

e) Vacancies that occur in the case of candidates who do not enroll, or that withdraw, will be filled by the candidates on the list referred to in number 6 a) (approved candidates), according to the criteria defined in the previous number.

f) From the results of this admission process, no appeals or complaints are allowed, except if based on a formal defect.
