MASTER IN MUSIC

VOICE

 1. Practical test:

- The candidate shall perform a 20 minutes program with contrasting works;

2. Written text in Portuguese or English, addressing the reasons for the candidate's presented program choices;

- The text should be presented in A4 format, font size 12;

3. Interview.

COMPOSITION

 1. Portfolio presentation:

- The portfolio should present works that the candidate considers relevant in his, or her, production, including recordings of their live public performances, if possible;

2. Written text in Portuguese or English, addressing the reasons for the candidate's selection of works in the portfolio;

- The text should be presented in A4 format, font size 12;

3. Interview.

CHORAL AND ORCHESTRAL CONDUCTING

 1. Portfolio presentation:

- The portfolio should present a briefing about the candidate's conducting experience, and should include a DVD with examples of works conducted by the candidate for, at least, 2 different music ensembles: winds orchestra, strings or symphonic orchestra, large a cappella choir, small vocal ensemble, choir and orchestra, choir and instrumental ensemble, mixed instrumental ensemble;

2. Practical test:

- Choral Conducting:

  • Conducting a free choice 15 minutes program with 2 contrasting works for a cappella mixed choir;
  • Error detection aural test.

- Orchestral Conducting:

  • Conducting test of approximately 15 minutes that includes a 5 minutes rehearsal and the following 10 minutes with the execution of the 1st movement of A. Dvorák "New World" 9th Symphony.

Remark: The jury may stop the test at anytime.

3. Written text in Portuguese or English, addressing the reasons for the candidate's selection of works in the portfolio and DVD;

- The text should be presented in A4 format, font size 12;

4. Interview.

INSTRUMENT

 1. Practical test:

- The candidate shall perform a 20 minutes program with contrasting works;

Remark: The jury may stop the test at anytime.

2. Written text in Portuguese or English, addressing the reasons for the candidate's presented program choices;

- The text should be presented in A4 format, font size 12;

3. Interview.

CLARINET

 1. Practical test:

- The candidate shall perform F. Poulenc Sonata for clarinet and piano.

Remark: The jury may stop the test at anytime.

- The text should be presented in A4 format, font size 12;

3. Interview.

JAZZ

1. Practical test:

- Solo or accompanied execution of 3 themes of contrasting tempo and character of the candidate's free choice (melody and improvisation, comping), with play-a-long (Aebersold, iRealb):

- Reading test (melody and cypher, with improvisation: for drummers, rhythmic etudes and/or big band work.

Remark: in case the themes include accompaniment, the candidate is responsible for arranging the accompanist, and also assure for his / her punctuality, as well as for the necessary material for the execution (instruments, cables, etc.), except for piano or drums and amplifiers, that will be available in the room.

2. Written text in Portuguese or English, addressing the reasons for the candidate's presented program choices;

- The text should be presented in A4 format, font size 12;

3. Interview.

Remarks

- All candidates must bring scores of the chosen themes;

- Vocalists must choose at least one theme with lyrics and another "instrumental" (without lyrics). Microphone and amplifier are provided by ESML;

- Drummers should show knowledge of single stroke, double stroke, single, double and triple paraddidle, swing (4/4 and 3/4), Latin, bossa nova; They must bring drumsticks and brushes;

- Guitarists and bass players must bring the necessary cables; Amplifiers are provided by ESML;

- Candidates should bring their play-a-longs (smartphone, mp3 player, tablet or pc;

- The instruments taught in ESML are: voice, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, electric guitar, double bass and drums. Candidates for other instruments should exhibit a technical field that the Jury considers quite a lot, since they may have an instrument class with another instrumentalist.

Assessment criteria

The evaluation of the practical test is global, taking into account the following elements (classified as insufficient, sufficient, good, very good): sound quality and tuning; technical competence (articulation, dexterity, etc.); rhythmic sense; notion of form / harmony (degree of harmonic awareness in improvisation); creativity / vocabulary; expressivity / musicality and sight reading.
