Learning Outcomes (knowledge, aptitudes and skills to be developed by the students)

Acquire abroad anddeep insightintonal contrapuntal techniques,namelythose used in Baroque Fugue (eighteenth century), andrelatingthe techniques developed in this period withtheiruse in the following centuries: nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through the comparative study of some works andrelevantcomposers.

Syllabus:

Study of the Fugue. Overall structure of the Fugue and differences between modal and tonal counterpoint. The exposition, the central part (development) and the final part (recapitulation). Analysis and listening of J. S. Bach's Fugues. Study of Fugue and other free contrapuntal forms after Bach: XIX, XX and XXIst centuries, through analysis and comparison with works by Beethoven, Frank, Hindemith, Bartók, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Webern, Berg, Ligeti, etc.. Analysis and listening of pieces from the XX and XXIst centuries that use contrapuntal devices. Preparation of exercises over both periods’ styles. At the end of the semester, students must complete: 1. A Fugue in the Style of Bach (3-4 voices). 2. A free style piece (vocal or instrumental) that uses contrapuntal features in an up-to-date way.

Demonstration of the Articulation of the Programme Contents with the Objectives of the C.U.

Since the objective of this C.U. is the acquisition of knowledge and skills so that the student can intervene in a variety of artistic and musical contexts, the syllabus indicated is selected in order to meet the scope of the issues involved.

Teaching and Evaluation Methods:

The teaching methodology is based on systematic and organized presentation of information through questioning, critical analysis and research suggested by the teacher, complemented with its study and discussion applied to the study of works and Composition exercises, under the guidance and supervision of the teacher in order to ensure knowledge and skills acquisition process, as specified in the C.U. objectives - The evaluation process is based on observation of the quality of participation in the activities developed during the course, including preparation for class, presentations and other tests or exams, verifying the level of the acquired knowledge and skills as specified in the C.U. objectives

Demonstration of the Articulation of the Teaching Methodologies with the Learning Objectives of the C.U.:

The coherence between the teaching methodologies with the learning objectives is assessed and demonstrated by the very nature of the performance and progress of students in classes, presentations, papers and exams.
