Learning Outcomes (knowledge, aptitudes and skills to be developed by the students)

Understand how sound propagates inside enclosures. Understand the acoustic differences between large and small enclosures. To know and understand the various acoustic phenomena that occur inside enclosures. To know the parameters that qualify room acoustics. To know how to evaluate an enclosure acoustically, both subjectively and objectively. To know how to design the acoustics of an enclosure. To know the fundamentals of electroacoustic installations.

Syllabus:

Sound in open spaces and enclosed spaces. Standing waves and resonance. Eigenmodes and eigenfrequencies. Reverberation time. Acoustic absorption and diffusion. Near and far sound fields, and critical distance. Acoustical measurements. Impulse response and early reflections. Studios and rooms for critical listening. Subjective and objective acoustical parameters. Acoustics of large rooms. Electroacoustic installations.

Demonstration of the Articulation of the Programme Contents with the Objectives of the C.U.

Considering the objectives of this curricular unit, any expert in the field can conclude that all the syllabus points aim to give the students the competences and the required knowledge and skills to reach the learning outcomes.

Teaching and Evaluation Methods:

The teaching methodology is based on the systematic and organized expository presentation of information through reflection, critical analysis and research suggested by the teacher, complemented with its study and discussion and with the guidance and supervision of the process of acquiring knowledge and skills provided for in the objectives of the UC - Classes with a large component of exercises solved and applied to room acoustics. Several practical works are carried out by the students in order to cement the knowledge acquired in class. Group / Class. This UC is given to a class in group classes. The evaluation process is based on the observation of the quality of participation in the activities developed during the teaching of the course, including presentations and discussion of works, other tests, tests or exams, verifying the degree of acquisition of the knowledge and skills acquired foreseen in the objectives from UC CONTINUOUS EVALUATION AF = Tx0.5 + TRABx0.4 + PARTx0.1 AF - Final Evaluation TRAB – Trabalhos práticos.

Demonstration of the Articulation of the Teaching Methodologies with the Learning Objectives of the C.U.:

The teaching methodologies are based on the transfer of theoretical and practical concepts through the extensive use of practical exercises and case studies (real), together with classes where the students conduct experimental work. All the concepts and fundamentals presented in the syllabus are widely discussed with the students in the lessons, and, whenever possible, these concepts are applied to real situations that the students know by themselves. This way one can satisfy the objective that the students can learn all concepts related to room acoustics, in practice. The coherence of the teaching methodologies with curricular unit’s objectives is measured by the performance and progress of students in the lessons, and in the results of the practical works and of the tests or exams.
