Gen. Objectives: Study the historical and cultural contexts that frame the several periods of jazz history until the end of the 1940’s. Study the musicians and key personalities of each of these periods, understanding their contribute to jazz history. Specific Objectives: Analyze the main musical, performative and aesthetic features of each one of these periods of jazz history. Research and present a research paper. Competences: Distinguish the key musical, aesthetic, performative, cultural and social elements that relate to several styles of jazz until the 1940’s. Understand how jazz is the product of the mixing of several aspects of geographically and culturally diverse musics, and how it is a way of artistic expression that reflects musically cultural and aesthetical diversities.

a) Definitions of jazz and it's main features b) Main historical approaches in jazz studies i) New Orleans ii) Minstrelsy, European art music, marches and military music, worksongs, spirituals, blues, and ragtime iii) Main features of African-American music d) Early Jazz i) New Orleans jazz ii) The big migration and Chicago jazz iii) New York in the 20's and the Harlem Renaissance iv) The Piano Stride school and early Big Bands e) The Swing era i) Fletcher Henderson, Paul Whiteman and Duke Ellington ii) Swing as a musical and comercial phenomenon iii) Swing big bands and performative contexts iv) The role of the rhythm section v) Benny Goodman and the end of the Swing era f) Bebop i) Early bebop and anti-commercialism ii) Musical features

Demonstration of the Articulation of the Programme Contents with the Objectives of the C.U.

The syllabus covers the transformations of jazz History, until the end of the 1940’s, and offers a chain of diachronic and interdisciplinary contents, susceptible to become critically explored around the relationships that unite Music to other arts and cultural domains.

Teaching and Evaluation Methods:

The teaching methodology is based on systematic and organized presentation of information through questioning, critical analysis and research suggested by the teacher, complemented with its study and discussion, and with guidance and supervision of the knowledge and skills acquisition process, as specified in the C.U. objectives - The evaluation process is based on observation of the quality of participation in the activities developed during the course, including presentations and discussion of assignments, other tests or exams, verifying the level of the acquired knowledge and skills as specified in the C.U. objectives

Demonstration of the Articulation of the Teaching Methodologies with the Learning Objectives of the C.U.:

The teaching of the study unit implies the narration of the theoretical subjects, founded on the bibliography and accompanied with the listening of characteristic musical examples. Hand in hand with the above methodology, students are encouraged to research and think via critical analysis and observation of documents, such as texts, musical, iconographic, and other sources. The outcome of this work will be presented in the classes, thus enhancing the interchanging of ideas and the intertwining of perspectives.
